COULD TAKING A CALCIUM BASED ANTACID BE DECREASING MY IRON ABSORBENCY?

Question by MAR:
Could taking a calcium based antacid be decreasing my iron absorbency?

Hi there, I read someplace that calcium taken two hours from iron consumption decreases iron absorption, is this correct?

Hi,

Yes that is appropriate, any calcium (milk, youghurt, dietary supplements) will interfere with iron absorption. If you are taking calcium based meds and iron supplements you require to make positive that you take them as far apart as you possibly can (not just 2 hours).

If you are not taking iron supplemetns then you are obtaining most of your iron from your main meal (dinner) so you ought to try and prevent taking your calcium based meds close to your principal meal.
